i have the earlier version of the toy chest, the one without the shelf. the earlier one has higher grade plastic and is larger. setup for this one with the shelf requires screwing through the plastic without the help of guide holes in order to attach the shelf to the chest. i was worried initially but the plastic didn't require pre-drilling

This bookcase would probably provide ample storage for books and toys of one child. I love that it combines toy chest and bookcase in one, providing for efficient use of room space. Parents with two kids (and lots of toys), like myself, would probably need two of these to organize all of the toys. All in all, this is a great product for a good price.

I love this toy box! I have it in my son's playroom, who just turned one. I can put all his toys away in the bin when we clean up and the book shelf is great to place books and stuff animals. The only thing is to make sure you close the bin when you are not pulling out toys. I had it open and stepped out the room to start making diner. My son tried to get a toy out and fall in. I heard him yelling for me and found him upside-down in the toy bin. Of course it just scared him, but it was a good laugh. Needless to say we keep the bin closed at all times.

This toy box is exactly what I was looking for to store our playroom toys. You wouldn't believe how much fits inside! We use the shelves to hold toys as well, a bonus. We love it. And I feel like it's a much safer choice than the wooden boxes with hinges. I absolutely recommend it.

This was just what we needed. I had looked at some toy chests and bookshelves that matched my son's bedroom furniture. I was concerned about all the sharp corners and stability. This product is sturdy and safe...even when he climbs to the top!

This toy chest is light weight, very sturdy and has a surprising amount of storage. The book shelf is just the right height for toddlers and I really like the way the lid to the chest slides out of the way. I purchased this chest for my grandson's 1st. birthday. Guess what the first thing in the chest was!!! He fit quite nicely inside.

It's easy to use and there's no set up! My son, who's 17 months old, has figured out how to open it. This is an awesome toy box. I'll definitely buy it in the future if I need another one. It holds a lot more than I realized! I keep it in the living room for my son's toys.

I looked everywhere to find a toy chest for my one year old son. This is the one I finally decided on. My son absolutely loves it too. He climbs inside of it, but it does not tip over. It is something that he can use for years.

We love this toybox! The "door" on the front doesn't close all the way to the bottom, so no finger pinches. It holds a lot, and the bookcase is and shelf on top help with space issues, too. Perfect! I love it!

I ordered this for my 16 month old son for Christmas. I couldn't be more pleased. First...I ordered late and still got it in time for Christmas. I love that the lid can slide into a position so that it stays open so I don't have to worry about him pinching his fingers like on other toy chests. It has encouraged him to take his toys and play. I just love it and I don't usually take the time to write these reviews!

This toybox is great! It has a ton of room. We were using a big wicker basket for all my sons toys downstairs. My son (1 1/2yrs) would just tip the basket over anytime he would want a toy. This toy box he obviously can't do that but also its roomy enough that if he wants a toy on the very bottom of the pile he can just move stuff around inside to get it.
The books shelves are great too, he has quite a bit of books. We put the baby books on the bottom shelf were he can reach then on his own and we put the Little Leap Pad books and cartriges up top that way he won't get into them unless we get them down for him.
He has climbed on this a few times and its very sturdy it has a wider base so you don't have to worry about it tipping over.
The colors are great it matches well with any decor. The red is not too over powering.
I love toy box for the price it's the best out there.

This product is wonderful. I have a 18 month old son who's using it. He can get his toys in and out easliy. There's plenty of room for all his toys and the book shelf allows him easy access to all his books.

This was purchased for my 21-month-old, and it is perfect. It is extremely durable, easy for a toddler to learn to open and close, stable, and it comes fully assembled. I love the shelf for his books too.

I bought this for my 1 year old in order to keep the toys out of my living room. I love it! It is very durable and sturdy. It has more space than it seems. It has enough room for my son's toys,even for some of his bigger trucks and toys. There is even plenty of room for books on the book shelf and room for display or storage on the top shelf. This is a great investment especially if your child's room is not that big. I will buy another one for my second son when he need it! This is a great product.

We have 2 families living in our house right now so the storage was really important. Because the toy box holds books as well as toys, it was a great choice for us. It seems sturdy since our 18 month grandson thinks it's great for climbing too. Hasn't tipped over yet! The lid for the toy box doesn't close down all the way so little fingers can't be pinched.

I put this chest in my son's bedroom. He is two years old. This chest is perfect for him. He can reach into the chest on his level. The chest has NO sharp corners or edges. The lid doesn't fall off either. Very nice price as well.

I love this item. I bought it because it was plastic and I have a very active 15 month old daughter who bumps into everything and will climb on anything. This was a perfect toybox/ bookshelf for her. My only complaint is that she will climb up the front if the toybox lid is open. Not every child will do this, but it's worth pointing out if you choose to momentarily leave your toddler alone in a room to play. Other than that, we've decided to find other Step 2 items to purchase for her!

I had no idea about the measure of safety in this chest. I did not foresee that my child would climb into the box, or else I would have never bought it. So when I found her and took her out, I noticed that the lid does not close into a locking position. There is about a 1/2 inch gap , I'm sure for that reason and the child can still breath. I really like that.

I love this storage chest. I was very leary that the chest would be big and bulkly or much smaller than it appears in the picture. I was pleasantly surprise to find that the chest is true to size. It fits neatly in the corner of a room. It is not large and over powering in the room, yet it is very spacious and roomy. I love the books shelf. The shelf holds a lot of book. I hit the jack pot when I decided on this purchase. It works extremely well for my 16 month old. I would recommend adding an optional divider to separate different types of toys.

I have a very adventuresome toddler and could not get his furniture tethered to the wall. I had problems finding the studs and am not handy with tools at all. Just to stay on the safe side, I moved his dresser into a walk in closet and decided to get rid of the old, heavy wooden bookcase and replace it with this. It's perfect! He has very large books that fit on the shelf with no problems. I have his monitor and piggy bank sitting on the top, which lies flat and he loves crawling inside the toy box. The best part, is that I don't have to worry about this tipping over on top of him while he plays. The colors are a very nice complement to his bedroom, also. I love Step 2 products so much.

Really works well as a book shelf and toy box.
My son really loves it. Half the time he takes his toys out and sits in it himself. Plus it was really nice not having to assemble anything. We are both very pleased with it.
