About New Zealand Radiata Pine Wood:
Radiata Pine, better known as 'New Zealand Pine' is a softwood tree that contains many properties that make it very suitable for furniture and furniture making. It has a density equal to that of hardwoods like poplar, mahogany and oak. Its uniform density ensures a smooth and consistent texture and confers its excellent machining, painting and staining properties; there is almost no variation in color between pieces. Da Vinci's pine wood originates from forests maintained by managers that enforce environmental responsibility and the conservation of forest wildlife.

After my son outgrew his cosleeper, I chose this crib because of its contoured front rail. It allows you to bend over and place a sleeping baby on the mattress without bruising your ribs or fumbling with drop side hardware. The lack of a dropside also increases the structural stability of this inexpensive piece. Like most affordable, ready-to-assemble furniture, this is a global product. It is manufactured in China from New Zealand lumber. The crib is solid pine, making the individual pieces lightweight but easily scratched and dented. On opening the package there were already a number of small dents all over the pieces. The natural finish reduces offgassing. I did not notice any smells when opening the package, as you may experience with stained pieces. The rolling storage drawer is made of pressboard with solid pine supports. Assembly was easy, however the instructions are not explicit. Several of the illustrations are incorrect. One of the barrel nuts was threaded funny, and at first I couldn't screw in the bolt. By removing the nut and turning it around before reinserting it, I was able to make it work with a little force. I would recommend that when you are ready to install the steel bedspring, you do so with a helper. Otherwise it is a bit unwieldy, and you will scartch up the finish. If you are reasonably handy or have put together a few pieces in you time, assembling this crib should go pretty smoothly. The crib is sturdy, as well as simple and attractive. It fits a standard size crib mattress perfectly, and Baby likes it just fine. I am satisfied with the Parker convertible crib and plan to use it as a toddler bed when the time comes.
